Size Chart
Please
note that the actual size on your computer screen will depend in part on
the size and resolution of your moniter.
I
recommend that you put a mm ruler on your screen and compare the mm size.
For some of you these dots will appear larger than their actual size.

These stones make wonderful post (stud) earrings, that are inexpensive to make and have been popular sellers for 25 years or more. Here are a few pointers to make this project much easier.
1. Earring Post: I highly recommend surgical steel posts. You can get these posts in base metal, sterling, gold filled, and even 14k gold, but by far the most useful and commonly used is surgical steel. Surgical steel posts are inexpensive and do not cause allergic reactions for almost everyone. Each stone requires a specific shape and size of post. Generally there are two styles that are readily available. These are cups and flats. The cups are used for the Round Stones, which have pointed bottoms or ridge bottoms. (The flats are used for Fancy Stones with flat bottoms.) Stones with pointed bottoms fit nicely into most cups, provided the size is appropriate.
These surgical steel posts come in a variety of sizes. The most common sizes are 3mm, 4mm, 5mm (when available), 6mm, 8mm and 10mm. In general the size of the cup required for any stone is usually about 1-2 millemeters smaller than the actual stone size. Some jewelers use an even smaller size of cup or flat when gluing, which looks nice, but the bond of the glue is weaker because it covers less area.
You will need clutches for the back of your crystal post earrings. Again, I recommend surgical steel or plastic. We currently stock surgical steel clutches.
We currently have some posts and clutches for sale, however I recommend that you check out findings companies for a larger variety of choices. If you place a small order to test these out, we can include the appropriate findings for your order. The prices for our posts and clutches are all priced per 1/2 ounce:3mm cup - $ 11.00 (approximately 290 posts)
4mm cup - $ 8.00 (approximately 210 posts)
6mm cup - $ 6.00 (approximately 110 posts)
8mm cup - $ 6.00 (approximately 65 posts)clutches - $ 5.00 (approximately 225 clutches)
2. Glue: I highly recommend a slow drying epoxy. I found the best to be an epoxy that sets up in about an hour and dries hard in about 24 hours. You can find some epoxies that set up in about 5 minutes and dry hard in about 4 hours, but these are not as strong, and the setting time does not work well if you are making a large number of post earrings at one time. Purchase an epoxy (or other glue) that is recommended for glass and metal. Some are good for one, but not recommended for the other. Super glue is definitely not recommended.
With the slow drying epoxy, you will need to set the stone on your post and then check on it in about 15 minutes or so to be sure it is centered properly. There is a tendency for the stone to slip over the first few minutes, depending on how level your post is and the shape of the stone. Once the stone begins to set up firmly, don't adjust the setting or you will weaken the bond.
It is important not to touch the bottom of the crystals or the top of your post (particularly the flat posts) with your fingers. Your fingers have a slight amount of oil or dirt on them, which will weaken the bond. Many jewelers also soak both the stone and the post in Acetone first, before gluing. This cuts through any oily or greasy film that might be on them. The Acetone will not damage the crystal stone or the foil in any way.
3. Jig (for gluing): If you create a jig, your gluing project will be much easier, and you can use it over and over. I made jigs that lasted 20 years and served me very well. There are two kinds that work well. The simplest is a firm styrofoam. You can stick the post down into the styrofoam and apply glue to the flat or cup. Then set your earring stone onto the post. Over time the styrofoam will fill with holes and you will need to replace it.
A more permanent jig can be made from a square of plywood or other wood product. You will need a drill and a 1mm (or slightly smaller) drill bit. Drill holes down into the wood that allow the stud to sit in the small hole, but keeps the cup or flat raised slightly off the wood. You can stagger the holes approximately 1/2" apart in a series of rows. A small jig like this can be used to make hundreds of earrings in a relatively small area.
4. Earring Cards: Most of you will need earring cards for your finished project. We have some 1" x 1" gray earring cards with a folded ridge on the back. These cards have "Austrian Crystal" embossed on them. As long as we have them in stock, we will sell them for 10 cents each. You may well want to design your own cards for these.*
